Developer Studio Editions Available
By Dimitris Poulos
Starting with release 7.6 we have made changes in our Developer Studio product line to simplify the available offerings, adjust product capabilities to accommodate customer requests by filling gaps in older editions, and fine-tune available editions based on the way customers use the product for development.
From what we have seen, the trend has been to perform primarily remote development against central WebFOCUS environments.
This is ideal for group development as many developers can easily share application resources, and avoid copy and deploy procedures as well as conflicts that can arise. Developers can use the Developer Studio built-in feature of Source Control to perform versioning of files.
The new Developer Studio product line contains the following editions:
WebFOCUS Developer Studio
This is the enterprise edition, which provides all available features and supports all development methods. This edition is targeted for administrators and power users and includes the following developing options and tools:
Remote and local/standalone project development
Maintain development
-
Application development from the Data Servers area
-
Managed Reporting development
Managed Reporting administration including user management
Access to all Windows graphical tools including HTML Layout Painter, Report Painter, FML Painter, Graph tools, and Metadata tools Create Synonym, Synonym Editor
Creation of Business Views
Available as a network installation
Note: This edition also installs a local Reporting Server with a single-user license and is available for standalone development.
WebFOCUS Developer Studio and Visual Discovery
This edition is based on the WebFOCUS Developer Studio edition and also includes Visual Discovery components. It provides many visualization tools and features and allows developers to design highly interactive reports using cutting-edge data visualization capabilities.
WebFOCUS Report Developer
This is a new edition that includes features drawn from the WebFOCUS Developer Studio edition. This edition is targeted to power users and development is performed against remote WebFOCUS environments.
Differences from the WebFOCUS Developer Studio edition:
No local/standalone development
Development available from the Projects, Data Servers and Managed Reporting areas
No Maintain
No Managed Reporting administration
Depending on the user development requirements and/or restrictions that need to be applied to developers, this edition can also be installed with a different license to provide capabilities that were available in the Managed Reporting Developer (MRD) edition.
The MRD edition allows only Managed Reporting development, and access to the data servers is based on Managed Reporting user-access rights.
