NYSIA Hosts “Great Debate”: Does IT Still Matter?

Throngs of IT folk gathered September 8 at The Harvard Club of New York City for the New York Software Industry Association’s (NYSIA) monthly meeting featuring such distinguished speakers as Information Builders CEO Gerald Cohen and former Harvard Business Review Editor Nicholas Carr.

Carr recently challenged conventional wisdom of the country’s business elite with his HBR article titled “IT Doesn’t Matter.” Cohen, NYSIA chair, argued in a subsequent InformationWeek op-ed that IT does indeed matter. Other noted speakers at the stimulating session included Gartner Research VP Bill Rosser and American Technology Research VP Mark Stahlman. Information Builders Advances to Gartner Leaders Quadrant

A new analyst report revealed that Information Builders has advanced its position on Gartner’s most recent Enterprise Business Intelligence Magic Quadrant.* The report cites Information Builders in the Leaders quadrant, based on its ability to execute and completeness of vision.

“We believe Information Builders is one of the clear leaders in the business intelligence market,” stated Gerald Cohen, Information Builders president and CEO. “Breaking through to Gartner’s Leaders quadrant confirms the success we are experiencing with new and existing customers. Our sales substantiate that our complete, integrated offering is unique in the industry and delivers immense value to customers.”

Focus on Cost Effectiveness

Gerald Cohen was profiled recently in The Financial Times, in a thought-provoking piece called “A Focus on Cost Effectiveness.” “Software should reduce the complexity of sprawling systems,” wrote Michael Dempsey, who captured Cohen’s thoughts on the software industry at large as well as the wide-ranging reasons for Information Builders’ history of success. The Magic Quadrant is Gartner, Inc.’s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the Leaders quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise’s requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
