Business Intelligence, Integration, and Data Integrity Solutions for Healthcare.

Butler Memorial Hospital, the centerpiece of the Butler Health System (BHS) in Western Pennsylvania, is comprised of 294 beds, 2,200 employees, 25 outpatient sites and sees $217 million in annual revenue.

With such responsibility, we needed a system that provided a clear view of our data across the organization. And like all U.S. based healthcare providers, we were also under pressure to comply with CMS Value Based Purchasing, Readmission Reduction and Meaningful Use requirements as well as well as private payer incentive programs. This meant meeting a wide assortment of guidelines and offering reputable data for measurements and feedback as evidence of our accomplishments.

To effectively fulfill this “meaningful use” eligibility, it was clear that we needed accurate, near real-time analytics on the current state of the facility. This motivated our search for an exceptional BI platform that could achieve this goal. We encountered numerous useful tools, but none that met our ultimate need. This was until we discovered Information Builders and its WebFOCUS Developer Studio. It was a perfect fit and it delivered the right services, products and analytics environment to help us meet the Federal Government’s “meaningful use” criteria.

WebFOCUS’ reporting portal collects information about patients at the patient level and providers at the provider level and shows aggregated data, allowing our Performance Improvement team to quickly find and fix problems. For example, why do some patients spend more than three and a half hours in the emergency room, when the average wait is only two and a half? This, among many other questions, was answered when we did a “data raid” with Information Builders.

BHS must show that it is consistently using electronic medical records in order to reach and exceed certain thresholds to guarantee reimbursements. WebFOCUS helped us verify this compliance by rolling up information from three different EMR systems and three different practice management systems into scorecards. These scorecards then provided real-time feedback to a wide selection of provider groups.

BHS makes it easy for administrators and clinicians to access WebFOCUS reports throughout the hospital by deploying them to iPad users. Because WebFOCUS tracks this data by doctor and provider, it could be applied at the hospital level where the reimbursement amounts are even higher.

BHS is just one of the many organizations that has worked with Information Builders to conduct a “data raid” and improve services. Make sure to visit again soon to see who will be featured next in Information Builders’ Data Raid blog series and to pick up the latest tips and best practices for taking advantage of comprehensive self-service BI and analytics solutions.
