2011
Ventana Research Leadership Award

Information Builders and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) received the 2011 Ventana Research Leadership Award. CMAP, a regional planning organization for seven counties and 284 communities in northeastern Illinois, used the WebFOCUS BI platform to develop MetroPulse, an online portal. MetroPulse enables government agencies and other entities to research and share information about the myriad factors impacting residents’ quality of life, including crime, economic development, transportation, housing, and safety.

The Stevie Awards

Information Builders Premium Support team received the “Customer Service Team of the Year” Stevie Award in the 2011 American Business Awards (ABA). Information Builders was also named a finalist in two additional categories, “Customer Service Executive of the Year” and “Customer Service Department of the Year.” This is the fourth consecutive year that the company's customer service has been recognized by ABA.

CIO Ones to Watch

For Coty's Inc.’s innovative use of Information Builders' technology, Coty's vice president of the Global Applications Center of Expertise, Gary Gallant, was presented with the “2011 CIO Ones to Watch” award from IDG’s CIO magazine and the CIO Executive Council. DM Review's 2008 Innovative Solution Award

Information Builders customer, Louisiana Department of Social Services (LA DSS), won in the "BI/Analytics" category of DM Review's (now Information Management magazine) 2008 Innovative Solution Award for its antifraud system. Specifically, LA DSS was selected for its use of Information Builders WebFOCUS BI platform along with geographic information system (GIS) technology from ESRI.

    The library's BI system, MOD, allows employees to analyze many facets of the library operation, helping personnel track traffic patterns, use of materials, and inventory to preserve the services people care about most. The dashboard-driven environment empowers hundreds of employees to share information and create customized reports.
  • Most Humanitarian Use of BI Nationwide Insurance and Columbus City Schools
    Nationwide Insurance developed a tool for the Columbus City school district using BI technology that helps administrators analyze student data. This connects 4,000 teachers and administrators to student assessment data, attendance data, and discipline data with the overall goal of improving student achievement.
  • Best Use of BI in the Public Sector US TRANSCOM
    BI technology is helping US TRANSCOM devise optimal patient-movement plans based on urgent medical needs, available facilities, in-transit visibility, and enterprise-wide cost and performance analytics enabling the military's evacuation and patient movement activities in places like Iraq and Afghanistan to be more efficient.
  • Best Use of iWay Software TNT
    TNT provides mail and express services for customers worldwide. With high volumes of data in multiple locations, in a variety of languages, and on several platforms, the company brought in iWay integration solutions to help. Integrating with legacy systems, iWay's SOA solutions allow business units to access the data they need, when they need it, for improved decision-making.
2009 Computerworld Honors Award

Various Information Builders' customers won the 2009 Computerworld Honors Award for using BI technology to benefit society:

  • The United States Transportation Command (US TRANSCOM) developed TRAC2ES, a Web-based BI system that transports sick or injured personnel and coordinates their movement throughout the U.S. military's worldwide network of healthcare facilities. It supported Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom operations.
  • The New York Public Library created a BI system, Metrics On Demand (MOD), allowing employees to track visitor traffic, borrowing habits, and other key metrics. This data helps library personnel make decisions about which library resources and services are most important to the general public.
  • Columbus City Schools and Nationwide Insurance now provide greater insight and accountability to the education of more than 55,000 students at 130 schools in central Ohio. Nationwide developed a tool with the school district using BI to help administrators analyze student data.
  • The Erlanger, Kentucky Police Department created a BI system with integrated search capabilities that combines data from 19 government agencies to link information about suspects, incidents, arrests, and crimes. Police can now respond more knowledgeably to calls and provide better services to citizens.
  • Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway created a Maintenance Excellence Dashboard to monitor its infrastructure of tracks, signals, and structures, which improved safety, limited train delays, and minimized revenue loss.
  • The Federal Student Aid Office of the Federal Department of Education created the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) tool to improve assistance to students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Prince George's County Police Department developed the Active Crime Reporting dashboard to display statistics on calls for service such as robbery, homicide, car theft, and auto accidents, helping police officers lower crime within the county.
  • Spain's Ministerio de Trabajo e Inmigracion (Ministry of Immigration) implemented Project Lince, a BI environment that enforces immigration requirements by improving information integrity.

    Utz coordinates the sales and production of more than 20,000 pounds of potato chips every hour, and manages more than 700 delivery routes to 30,000 stores. Timing is crucial, which is why Utz uses BI technology to coordinate the timing among its production, marketing, sales, and distribution operations. WebFOCUS is at the heart of a system that allows managers to quickly gather and analyze current sales and distribution information. The BI environment delivers daily sales breakdowns in a form that is easy for busy salespeople to digest. This information helps them manage their routes and improves visibility throughout the supply chain, positioning Utz as a leader in its market.
  • Most Innovative BI Implementation – City of Houston Police Department
    BI technology is making steady inroads into law enforcement, as government agencies discover the power of intelligence-driven policing. The Houston Crime Center is using technology from Information Builders and ESRI to create a dynamic geographic information system (GIS) that maps crime patterns and predicts the likelihood of crime activity throughout the city. The BI environment has led to quicker arrests and more thorough criminal investigations.
  • Best New Enterprise BI – Ace Hardware
    With more than 4,600 stores throughout the U.S. Ace continues to expand and adopt more advanced information technology. IT leaders realized they could improve corporate efficiency by standardizing on one comprehensive BI environment. Ace selected WebFOCUS as its enterprise-reporting standard for its ability to create cohesive, user-friendly reports that scale to thousands of users. Ace estimates more than 2,000 users will be running or writing WebFOCUS reports on a daily basis.
  • Best Use of iWay Software – BT
    Recently, the telecom giant sought to eliminate inefficiencies and costs associated with cross-border trade settlements by providing communications for Euroclear's Common Communications Interface. BT asked iWay Software for help creating a secure messaging gateway that enables straight-through processing over standard business protocols. BT's Managed Secure Messaging used iWay's SOA Middleware Platform to deliver a reliable messaging service that features complete security, guaranteed delivery, non-repudiation, auditing, encryption, and integrated access controls.
  • Customer Lifetime Award – JCPenney
    The well known retailer has partnered with Information Builders since February 1978 and, 30 years later, store associates across the country continue to rely on its BI technology. JCPenney utilized the FOCUS product during the 1980s and early 1990s as the primary means for reporting merchandising sales and profits. In 2000 the retailer implemented WebFOCUS, continuing its investment in Information Builders' innovative solutions. Today, JCPenney remains a loyal customer with the implementation of a new application to help monitor its day-to-day store operations.

American Business Awards Finalists 2008

  • E. & J. Gallo Winery Best Enterprise BI Solution. Gallo has deployed over 1,000 WebFOCUS reports to 3,000 users across 19 lines of business, including customer service, event management, supply chain, finance, warehouse operations, forecasting, and wine management. Executives can create on-demand budget reports using WebFOCUS to help them keep an accurate, up-to-date eye on financials.
  • St. George Bank Best Operational BI. The bank uses WebFOCUS is extending awareness to every corner of its operation, with user-friendly reporting applications for analyzing credit, managing loans, and complying with a raft of industry regulations. More than 500 users depend on WebFOCUS to deliver current operational data and the results have increased productivity and financial savings, helping make their review process more proactive and efficient.
  • Prince George's County Most Innovative Use of WebFOCUS. The Prince George s County Police Department relies on WebFOCUS to ensure that agency communications are efficient, pervasive, and secure. Prince George s County s Active Crime Reporting system is making the community a safer place to work and live, as officer s use BI technology to quickly access service calls and respond to 911 emergencies.
  • Oklahoma Department of Human Services Most Humanitarian. OKDHS uses WebFOCUS to help caseworkers provide better family services. The software enables the agency to track the precise needs of each child, from initial investigations by caseworkers through foster care, adoption, financial assistance, and post-adoptive financial assistance services. Caseworkers now have the correct information on compliance issues, contacts, court reports, and treatment plans so paperwork doesn t hold up the urgent needs of children.
  • Coty Inc. Highest ROI. The company utilized iWay s integration technology to integrate infrastructures, completing the project in five months and saving several million dollars. Coty also built a foundation for real-time operations by building an SOA allowing for the creation of a flexible architecture to provide views into real-time data operations.
Computerworld Honors Award Seven Customers Accepted for Outstanding IT Achievement, 2007

In 2007, these customer applications were accepted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution for their innovative uses of technology:

  • Air Canada for its multi-trip pass product that enables companies, ranging in size from small businesses to large corporations, to better manage travel while simplifying the booking process for employees. The WebFOCUS application provides a unique reporting solution, and employees enjoy the ease of use and flexibility while travel managers can rely on a robust online reporting tool to track and manage all user activity. The system helps corporations reduce and simplify the management of travel costs.
  • City of Richmond Police Department is using WebFOCUS, predictive analysis from SPSS, and dynamic geographic information system (GIS) mapping from ESRI, to predict the likelihood of crime in each city sector. The new operational system powered by WebFOCUS allows the city s crime analysts to look at the interaction between present and past data, such as arrest records, motive, and type of crime at a particular location based on the day, time, weather, and the coincidence of public events. This insight enables the city to knowledgeably optimize police resources to deter crime.
  • The Hillman Group created an effective way to react to sudden changes in any of its many product lines. They streamlined revenue reporting with real-time data, empowered business users, and helped managers better identify and address problems. WebFOCUS' GIS integration has enabled cost-effective decisions about shipments. Hillman has already realized hard-dollar returns: Hillman used the BI fill-rate reporting system to analyze instances to prove that it had not short-shipped, saving $131,000 in fines.
  • Jefferson Regional Medical Center constructed a self-service reporting environment with WebFOCUS that organizes reports into three primary groups: financial reports for the finance department, productivity reports for department managers, and bed-management reports for hospital administrators. Information management has become an integral part of the hospital's daily management activities boosting staff productivity, improving physician deficiency rates, and cutting costs throughout the facility.
  • LaBarge Inc. improved efficiency and profitability of their production lines. Using WebFOCUS, they gave authorized users easy access to information. From purchasing to customer service, contracts, and accounting, LaBarge employees no longer struggle to extract the information they need.
  • St. George Bank developed a groundbreaking solution addressing credit risk monitoring and management, management reporting, loans management, consolidation and regulatory reporting (largely, as a result of the BASEL regime), and default and compliance management. The solution provides a more efficient and proactive way of conducting portfolio reviews with online access to past inspection comments and real-time access to current reviews. An intuitive, visual workflow-related interface enables users to conduct train-of-thought analysis and stay focused on the business objective with automated distribution of issues intuitively guiding users to areas of concern. Savings in time and money have resulted through reduced administration and portfolio review preparation, decreased paper volume, a 40 percent reduction in the time to complete an inspection review, and a simplified user experience requiring less support.
  • Caja General de Ahorros de Granada created an application to monitor and measure the bank s performance. Certified by the Balanced Scorecard Collaborative (BSC), WebFOCUS converts the bank s strategy into a series of well-defined steps and clearly presents then in a highly visual format, helping management to see and understands objectives, initiatives, and results. This solution helped to effectively communicate the new company strategy to its employees. Its also aligned all the internal information necessary to comply with objectives.
Gartner Business Intelligence Excellence Award

The City of Richmond, Virginia Police Department deployed a new operational system powered by WebFOCUS that allows the city s crime analysts to look at the interaction between present and past data, such as arrest records, motive, and type of crime at a particular location based on the day, time, weather, and the coincidence of public events. This insight enables the city to knowledgeably optimize police resources to deter crime. As a result, crime was decreased by 49 percent and citizens made fewer 911 calls.

2007 TDWI Best Practices Award Winners

Richmond Police Department selected by a panel of independent judges to receive a TDWI Best Practice Award in the Government and Nonprofit category. TDWI's Best Practices Awards program identifies and honors excellence in developing, deploying, and maintaining business intelligence and data warehousing applications.

Computerworld Honors Award - Seven Customers Accepted for Outstanding IT Achievement, 2006

In 2006, these customer applications were accepted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution for their innovative uses of technology:

  • The City of Houston – The new business intelligence reports delivered by a new reporting system constructed with Information Builders' WebFOCUS and iWay technologies, helps six city departments more effectively manage over $55 million of permits and fees revenue, and provides new services for all users and customers served.
  • JPMorgan Chase – The Enterprise Computing Services (ECS) division used WebFOCUS to migrate thousands of NOMAD programs to a new Web-based business intelligence environment. The migration enabled the company to realize significant cost avoidance from annual licensing fees and consolidation of software.
  • Universidad de Almería doubled the percentage of graduates in the Area since its founding in 1993. The university uses WebFOCUS Balanced Scorecard to manage its performance – incorporating tools usually seen in the private sector into the management of a public institution.
  • Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), – This leading specialty retailer uses WebFOCUS to create a BI environment that offers more visibility into its merchandising operations for a wide range of users, from corporate executives to buyers and store managers.
  • NYU Medical Center – A Web-based tool that is volume-adjusted based on Relative Value Units correlated with payroll data provides management with a timely mechanism for monitoring labor expenses and productivity. When combined with rigorous analysis, a corrective action planning process, and strong management oversight, the results promote a culture of accountability.

2006 Campus Technology Innovators

At the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, a component school of the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), administrators developed a WebFOCUS-based, comprehensive online student-tracking system that delivers electronic reports in real time, with full drill-down capability. Color-coded grade records reduce interpretation time.

  • TELUS – Built a scorecard application using WebFOCUS that gathers and measures data from 3,000 field personnel for 100 business managers, driving regional productivity gains of $1 million to $2 million per month
  • Louisiana Department of Social Services Office of Family Support, Fraud, and Recovery Section – Improved fraud detection within the state food stamp program by creating a Web-based reporting tool using WebFOCUS that can access transactional data and display results in a variety of formats Medline Industries, Inc. ( finalist) – Turned to WebFOCUS for a BI solution in finance to reduce transaction costs through process optimization, and in operations, to drive significant costs out of the entire supply chain
  • Badajoz Provincial Council Tax Collection Department (OAR) – Uses Information Builders' WebFOCUS suite for an alternative communication channel for the 169 town halls and 478,000 taxpayers in Badajoz, Spain

  • Air Canada – Best Operational Business Intelligence WebFOCUS reports help Air Canada s planners ensure that aircraft problems are corrected as soon as possible. WebFOCUS also produces a scorecard of key metrics to show how well each maintenance crew is performing. With this information in hand, Air Canada is able to improve aircraft reliability and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Bell Canada – Overall Excellence Using iWay Software Using iWay Software and WebFOCUS, the telecommunications giant has developed, from their enterprise data warehouse, a business intelligence application that enables customer service reps (CSRs) to maintain a current view of all interactions with customers, regardless of which channel customers use to contact the company. A custom-developed Web portal that provides up-to-the minute customer information to over 4,000 CSRs.
  • Elie Tahari – Most Innovative Application InSeam, Tahari's WebFOCUS business intelligence system, links legacy production systems with retail sales systems, allowing users to easily monitor inventory, order status, shipments, sales, and finance. Innovative use of photos and graphic imagery allows InSeam users to explore performance by clicking on pictures of each garment in their reports.
  • Pershing LLC – Best Use of Enterprise Business Intelligence In order to help its customers improve their business analysis and bolster corporate decision-making capabilities, Pershing needed a highly scalable enterprise BI and reporting environment that could deliver ad hoc reports on demand. WebFOCUS had the capabilities they were looking for, and also offered Pershing's customers the benefit of seamless integration with the firm's existing security framework and NetExchange Pro online brokerage platform – all for a low total cost of ownership.
  • State of Missouri Department of Social Services – Most Humanitarian Application To better serve Missouri citizens, the State's Department of Social Services (DSS) built a WebFOCUS business intelligence system that seamlessly integrates many different child welfare databases. The self-service environment lets caseworkers access complete client histories on demand, so they can tailor their services to the unique and documented needs of each individual. The end result is faster response and better care for people throughout the state of Missouri.

Integration Consortium Award for Excellence – 2005

iWay was recognized for participating in the SOA Showcase, a demonstration held during the IC 2005 Summit, where vendors leveraged skills and technology to deliver a real-time supply chain solution using service-oriented architecture (SOA) based business integration technology in just over 24 hours.
